The plan is to understand the value chains, economy, areas of growth potential within a corridor and products with high potential for investment across the country. Next step is to work with actors in each sector of business, non-governmental and governmental organizations. The selected items then will be exported that have high socioeconomic impact and are identified by the International Trade Center.
A joint University of Washington/ Mercy Corps Nepal team completed initial data collection in Nepal. This process included interviews with representatives of local and international NGOs, multiple government agencies, international organizations such as the United Nations and World Bank, private businesses, and trade associations. Most data collection took place in the capitol city of Kathmandu, and the team was limited by the low availability of concrete statistics and reports regarding the chosen commodities.
Based on feedback from these stakeholders, the team chose to use a web-based Google Earth format to display results. A web-based Google Earth map will be relatively easy for users to access, as it will not require them to purchase any special software. Embedding the map in a web page will also help to “guide” users as they navigate the map and include additional descriptive text and hyperlinks to relevant documents, websites, etc.
