Creating a community dialogue to explore research and education priorities for
regional safety and security.

This conference is a joint effort from four interdisciplinary centers at the University of Washington. Additionally, these four centers have recently created an interdisciplinary group, comprised of faculty from a number of different departments. The purpose of this new consortium (University of Washington Interdisciplinary Committee on Safety and Security Research and Education, or UWS2 for short) is to explore matters related to safety and security cooperation efforts. Many members of UWS2 will be speakers, moderators, and panelists at SASER 2008.

Pacific Rim Visualization and Analytics Center (PARVAC): The University of Washington’s Pacific Rim Visualization and Analytics Center (PARVAC) has the mission of advancing visual analytics for the enhancement of distributed, collaborative cognition and decision-making for public safety and security. The central goal of PARVAC’s research agenda is the application of visual analytic systems in support of analysts, responders, and incident managers in distributed operational environments, collaboratively engaged in awareness, analysis, decision-making, and actions that increase the safety and security of their communities and regions.

Institute for National Security Education and Research (INSER): The focus of the Institute is on increasing education and awareness in the field of national security, through a multidisciplinary approach.

Center for Information Assurance & Cybersecurity (CIAC): The mission of the Center will be to provide a forum for the collaboration of professors, professionals, industries, and students. A mission of the center is to identify, address, and promote visions and solutions for issues of information assurance and cybersecurity.

Center for Global Studies (CGS): The mission of the Center is to create new programs that will produce teachers, government officials, leaders and citizens capable of understanding the complexities, opportunities, dilemmas, threats, and beliefs that characterize the world in the 21st century. |
