The UW Institute for National Security Education and Research (INSER) at the Information School, together with SASER partners, recently won a subcontractor role to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln as a partner on the "Great Plains - National Security Education Program" 5-year, $3 million grant. Awarded by the ODNI IC Centers for Academic Excellence program, the Nebraska consortium will create and expand national security education and research opportunities across four Nebraska-based colleges and universities. INSER will work with GP-NSEC team members to create a network among the more than 30 U.S. institutions of higher learning that are members in the CAE network. INSER received a similar grant in 2006.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: Dr. Gary Klein, Klein Associates, will be speaking in Kane Hall, room 210, from 7-9pm. Dr. Klein is a pioneer in the field of naturalistic decision-making, has written several books on the subject, and his decision model has influenced changes in the ways the Marines and Army train their officers to make decisions. The Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Washington has established the Interdisciplinary Committee on Safety and Security Research and Education (UWS2, for short). The chair of the Committee is Professor Mark Haselkorn, PARVAC Director. The Interdisciplinary Committee may conduct collaborative research and plans to establish a graduate certificate program in safety and security studies in the near future. Prof. Mark Haselkorn, Director of Pacific Rim Visualization and Analytics Center, presented a brown bag talk for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) University Programs on October 3, 2008 in Washington, DC. The topic of the presentation was "Visual Analytics for Emergency Response: Process Improvement and Service Science." He discussed resilience and the enhancement of processes that increase resilience through improved understanding and use of data, information, knowledge, and communication.
